Wood restoration is a process that involves removing not just the dead fibers from sun damage/aging from the surface of the wood but also applying the proper wood mixtures that penetrate, removing contaminants, to recondition it to its original state. If you've never had your wood stained, this would most likely be a necessary step before doing so, unless your wood structure is new.
Maintainance Coats
If your wood already has a layer of protection, it will need to be retouched at some point down the road. Depending on the stain of choice, will determine approximately when you should revisit with a maintainance coat. Does wood have to be cleaned/stripped before staining?
If your new fence or deck is more than a couple of months old it may have to be cleaned but it isn't always the case.

My deck/fence was just built. Should I wait to stain?
Wood structures should be stained as soon as it is possible. The reason waiting is recommended is to allow the wood to weather,or dry, for the adhesion process of any staining product to be proper. This is why measuring wood moisture level is a must in our process. Once the wood reaches the approximate moisture level we then apply the stain of your choice. Staining your wood as soon as possible provides a protection of your investment to avoid any decay/rot.
