The black stains or steaks are caused by a specific type of algae called gloeocapsa magma. This growth is a type of bacteria that forms when algae spores group together. This colony thrives off the limestone granules embedded in your shingles, eating away the lifespan of your roof and compromising its integrity.

How do these organics get on my roof?

The most common areas algae, mold, mildew, & gloeocapsa magma form is near moist environments. Areas on your roof being covered by trees are more prone to organic build-up due to lack of sunlight and increase in moisture. Regardless if trees are around your property or not, airborne algae spores can actually travel through the air and land on your roof!
